Britney Butcher likely never imagined the impact she’d have on Miami soccer when she made the decision to travel across the country to play for the Hurricanes. But Butcher, who hails from Bothell, Washington, started her Miami career in style and continued setting the tone for the program during her entire time in Coral Gables.
As a freshman, Butcher totaled eight goals and eight assists in 20 games and was named the team’s Offensive MVP after leading the Hurricanes to their first NCAA Tournament berth. She earned a spot on the 2001 Big East All-Rookie team and a year later, was again selected as Miami’s Offensive MVP after scoring 16 goals in 19 matches and totaling 34 points.
Today, her name still appears throughout the Miami record book. Her 16 goals in 2002 remain a single-season high, and her 73 career points and 29 career goals both rank second in program history behind only Brittney Steinbruch. Butcher was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. She was the first soccer student-athlete to earn that honor.
